Colombian Queen

This is the Queen of the Carnival of Barranquilla. The first day of the Carnival of Barranquilla the elected queen of the year parades over her allegoric car at the start of the parade of the Battle of the Flowers. Behind her many folkloric groups, cumbiambas and musicians follow her lead.

Her outfit is a dress made with snippets of multicolor cloth, laces and feathers of diverse folkloric and traditional dances’ outfits that are part of the Carnival; because the queen represents the union of each of them and her mission is to share the joy of the carnival with everyone. Her skirt is wide and has layers of ruffles with the colors of the flag of Colombia. Finally a beautiful crown with sequins and feathers adorn her hair.

This is the cumbiambera doll. Cumbia is the main dance in the Carnival of Barranquilla. In this dance men court women and women flirt in response. Cumbia comes from musical and cultural syncretism of indigenous, black and, to a lesser extent, Europeans in the region of the Magdalena River’s delta. The traditional cumbiambera dress for women consists in a really long and wide skirt (of around 8 meters) and a tight blouse. It can be either with sleeves or without them. The style of the skirt can vary but overall the dress must have many ruffles around the lower skirt area, hem and bodice. It can be made with a red and white checkered or plain cotton fabric.

The traditional cumbiambera dress for women consists in a really long and wide skirt (of around 8 meters) and a tight blouse. It can be either with sleeves or without them. The style of the skirt can vary but overall the dress must have many ruffles around the lower skirt area, hem and bodice. It can be made with a red and white checkered or plain cotton fabric.

This is the Garabato Dance couple.

The queen of the carnival and the queen of beauty, participate in this dance against death in which life prevails is caricaturized. The Garabato dance traditional outfit is made out of silk and has yellow, green, and red as primary colors. These colors are the colors of the flag of Barranquilla. The skirt is long and layered; it has ruffles and a tight blouse with sleeves and with flared ruffles around the neck.

In the Garabato dance men wear a multicolor silk outfit with the colors yellow, green and red. A cape with figures embroidered in sequins complements the outfit a long with a stick with a bended tip (called garabato), the stick is used to protect each other and their women of the death that wants to take them away.
